Georgia
Zugdidi, the capital of the Samegrelo region in western Georgia, serves as gateway to both the Black Sea coast and the spectacular mountains of Svaneti, though the city itself offers limited tourist attractions compared to other Georgian destinations. The main highlight is the Dadiani Palace, the former residence of the powerful Dadiani princes who ruled Samegrelo—the palace complex includes museums displaying an impressive collection including Napoleon's death mask (acquired by one of the Dadiani princes who married into Napoleon's family), ancient manuscripts, personal effects of the royal family, and beautiful period furnishings. The palace grounds feature a botanical garden with exotic species. Zugdidi's strategic location makes it a practical stopover for travelers heading to Mestia (the mountain road to Svaneti starts here) or exploring the Enguri Dam, one of the world's highest arch dams creating a dramatic structure in the mountains. The city preserves some Soviet-era architecture and serves as a regional commercial center. The surrounding Samegrelo region is known for its unique cuisine, particularly megrelian khachapuri (cheese bread with cheese on top), kupati sausages, and elarji (cornmeal with cheese). While Zugdidi itself is primarily a transit point rather than a destination, it provides necessary services, accommodations, and represents authentic provincial Georgian life away from tourist trails. The city's markets offer glimpses into local daily life, and guesthouses provide budget-friendly lodging for those exploring the region.
